Climate Change Adaptation

The world's climate is and has been changing for millennia, but now more than ever, it is having dramatic impacts on human populations and the natural environments in which they live. While Pacific Island nations are facing some of the most immediate and devastating impacts from climate change, they often have the least resources (human, technical, and financial) to address this looming threat. Additionally, most climate change adaptation tools have focused on providing strategies to national and local governments and NGO audiences, not local communities. PIMPAC aims to address climate challenges by facilitating Pacific island communities and managers who support them through a process that assesses their most pressing needs, provides a suite of tools to address those needs, and prioritizes actions that can be taken at the community level.

Coastal Change Guides:

This guide is designed to support a community-based or local level management and adaptation planning process. It can be used to explore the non-climate change and climate change threats within a defined geographic area or community in which there is a clear governing structure and decision-making process. The area can be large or small as long as the planning team involved in facilitating the process has decision-making authority or has the support from the governing authority of the area. For example, the area might be defined as a small coastal community that has land and sea tenure. Or, the area might be a small region of the coastline with several communities that is governed by a central agency or group. However, this tool is not designed for urbanized or densely populated areas with complex social and governance systems.
